Opening a Skin Care Business during the Pandemic: The Story of Farida Studio Inc.
When aesthetician and educator Farida Lynch lost her job as head of the aesthetics department at the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon and Spa at The Westchester in White Plains after the pandemic lockdown on March 14, 2020, she decided to take charge of her own professional destiny. Despite the many challenges caused by the pandemic, such as mask mandates and the absence of a vaccine, Farida showed determination and resilience, opening her own skin care studio in June 2020. Today, Farida Studio Inc. is thriving and expanding its services amid the highly competitive medical spa industry.
The Birth of Farida Studio Inc.: Challenges and Opportunities
Farida Studio Inc. was founded with initial family capital on June 23, 2020, with an $800-a-week room at Sola Salon Studios in White Plains. Farida, along with two former Red Door employees, started offering eyebrow threading, tinting, and waxing services, which could be performed with masks in place. Eventually, Farida Studio Inc. gradually diversified its offerings, including facials, such as HydraFacials that use special machines, laser hair removal, nonsurgical toning and lifting, body wraps and scrubs, and massages. It currently occupies a 4,500-square-foot space at 120 Bloomingdale Road in White Plains, a prime location nestled next to the tony Waterstone of Westchester senior living complex, across the street from Bloomingdale’s and Whole Foods, and down the street from The Westchester, where Farida once worked.
Farida Studio’s success is due to multiple factors, including Farida’s loyal clientele from Red Door, who appreciated her skilled and personalized service, as well as Farida’s strong commitment to providing a comfortable, elegant, and safe ambience for her guests. Farida Studio offers six well-designed treatment rooms, a small lounge with refreshments, and a small yoga studio for yoga classes. Farida ensures that clients of all ages and genders feel welcome and at ease.
Farida Lynch: Passionate Aesthetician and Educator
Farida’s passion and expertise in skin care and alternative medicine have been part of her identity since her early days in Chennai, India. After high school, she studied ayurveda, a form of alternative medicine that emphasizes acupuncture, dietary changes, herbs, massage therapy, and yoga, in Kerala, India. Farida then studied skin care in the South Indian branch of Pivot Point, an American beauty institute. She also started her career as a teacher and later earned her American certification at Dermalogica Academy in Manhattan.
Farida’s commitment to excellence and customer service earned her recognition as a certified Red Door Educator, providing training in White Plains and other locations. Farida also ensures that her employees receive continuous training and keep up-to-date with industry advances.
Farida Studio’s Expansion and Philanthropic Activities
Farida Studio’s success is evident, with revenues growing from $100,000 in 2020 to seven figures in 2023. Farida Studio is now expanding its services with the addition of a doctor to offer botox, fillers, IV infusion therapy, advanced acne treatments, chemical peels, skin tightening, and advanced laser treatments like RF (radiofrequency) and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) microneedling.
Despite the pandemic’s challenges, Farida Studio’s commitment to local philanthropy remains strong. For example, 10% of proceeds during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October are donated to White Plains Hospital for breast cancer research, and the studio’s gift cards serve as prizes in various nonprofit fundraising events. Farida Studio’s enduring success is sure to continue with Farida Lynch’s remarkable combination of passion, expertise, and compassion.
