Investigation Launched into Matthew Perry’s Death
Police are currently investigating the death of actor Matthew Perry, best known for his role in the hit TV show “Friends.” Perry was found dead in a hot tub at his Pacific Palisades residence on October 28th. According to a statement released by the Los Angeles Fire Department, Perry was found unconscious in the hot tub by a bystander who had gotten his head above water while waiting for medical personnel to arrive. Once at the home, firefighters quickly pulled Perry from the water, but a rapid medical assessment revealed he died before first responders got there.
Authorities Believe Multiple Parties Responsible
According to a law enforcement source who spoke to People magazine, police believe “multiple people” should be charged in connection with Perry’s death. The investigation is reportedly near completion, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will ultimately decide whether to press charges. The attorney’s office declined to comment when asked about the case.
Deadly Drugs
While the exact cause of Perry’s death has not been officially released yet, Senior Deputy Medical Examiner Raffi Djabourian said in a released autopsy report that the cause of death was determined to be a result of the acute effects of ketamine. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic with both medical and surgical uses, and it’s often used recreationally because of its “dissociative” nature.
Perry had reportedly been receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat his depression and anxiety. However, trace amounts of ketamine were detected in his stomach during the autopsy. At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression.
The autopsy report listed contributing factors to Perry’s death as drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects. Buprenorphine is a medication commonly used to treat opioid use disorder. Perry’s official cause of death was listed as “the acute effects of ketamine,” with the manner of death being described as “accident (drug and drowning related).”
The Legal Ramifications of Drug-Related Deaths
Since Perry’s death was reportedly due to the acute effects of ketamine, authorities are looking into how he obtained the drug. This raises important issues about the legal ramifications of drug-related deaths. Criminal defense attorney Cori Ferrentino, who represented the drug dealer involved in Mac Miller’s overdose death, shared her insights on NewsNation’s “Banfield” about the supply chain behind deadly drugs.
Ferrentino explained that with regards to legal prosecution, authorities have recently started moving drug-related cases from state to federal court. She notes that while state courts often tried to prosecute individuals on a murder theory, they were having trouble proving intent to kill. However, in federal court, authorities only need to prove a conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. If the substance ends up resulting in a death, there is a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Conclusion
The investigation into Matthew Perry’s death is ongoing, and it’s unknown who will be charged in connection with the actor’s passing. What remains clear is the need for continued efforts to address drug addiction, distribution, and overdose in our society. As we strive to recognize and treat addiction as a medical condition rather than a moral failing, it’s important to remember that every drug-related death represents a loss and a tragedy for families and communities.
