PICC Lines: An Option for Long-term IV Therapy
Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters, or PICC lines, are specialized options for patients requiring long-term IV therapy. These lines are fed through a large vein in the arm and are placed close to the heart, making them more effective than traditional intravenous lines. PICC lines are a focus of this week’s Medical Monday, and we’ll discuss how they work, their uses, and potential risks.
How PICC Lines Work
According to Ashley St. Peter, RN, Manager of Infusion Care at Northern Light AR Gould, a regular IV stays on the surface of the blood vessel, while a PICC line goes deeper into the body, eventually reaching the heart. During the placement, doctors use a guidewire to place it close to the heart. They also use ultrasound technology to confirm the placement, along with ECG technology to ensure it’s in the right spot.
Uses of PICC Lines
PICC lines are ideal for patients who require long term IV therapy, such as patients who need long term IV antibiotics or if they’re receiving their nutrients through an IV. Patients who are experiencing irritated veins from certain medications may also benefit from PICC lines, but should consult their doctor first. These lines are typically used with individuals being treated at the hospital, but are also used in certain outpatient procedures.
While less invasive alternatives to PICC lines exist, they may not be as effective. A PICC line is a better option if a patient needs long-term access, as it will limit the number of times a patient is struck with an IV catheter.
Risks of PICC Lines
Like any IV insertion, there is a risk of infection with PICC lines. Additionally, patients with a history of blood clotting disorders need to be carefully evaluated before a PICC line is placed. A full health history, allergies, and medications should be reviewed by the doctor and the nurse placing the PICC line.
Conclusion
PICC lines are a commonly used procedure for long-term IV therapy. Despite the risks, these lines offer an efficient and effective solution for individuals requiring long-term access. Careful evaluation of a patient’s health history is necessary before placing a PICC line to ensure the patient’s safety and the effectiveness of the procedure.
