Protecting Alberta's Cancer Care: A Plea from Friday's Letters on Edmonton Journal

The Importance of Timely Treatment for Cancer Patients in Alberta Health Services

Introduction

As an editor of an online healthcare magazine, I am deeply concerned about the increased delays in proper care delivery for cancer patients at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) in Alberta Health Services. The urgency to provide proper treatment to critical patients, especially those with certain forms of cancer, cannot be overstated.

Personal Experience

In 2014, I was diagnosed with blood cancer, a lymphoma. Fortunately, I did not have to wait nine weeks to start receiving excellent care from the competent professionals at CCI. After prompt and carefully designed treatment, I have been in remission ever since, requiring only annual testing and medical monitoring. I am among the lucky ones, thanks to the prompt services and excellent staff that CCI was able to provide.

Legal Aid Fraud

While we all agree that Legal Aid needs to be reassessed with strict guidelines put in place to prevent fraud, the fraudulent use of Legal Aid services does not justify or excuse the increased delays in proper care delivery to cancer patients at CCI. I have personally witnessed a case where an individual who made six-figure income fraudulently received Legal Aid for two years. This issue clearly requires attention and action, and I hope the authorities address it soon.

U.S. Presidential Election and Canada’s Security

The development of U.S. president’s unbridled immunity for criminal activity should be a matter of concern for all Canadians. The ongoing Russia/Ukraine tragedies could potentially produce similar results here, especially if a Putin-like ruthless and greedy individual assumes the presidency with “the morals of an alley cat”. Given the true nature of President Trump and his “get-even intentions,” people on this side of the border may be pondering what they can do to avert such crisis. The best thing we can do is to repeat the warning message to our American friends, who may not be looking forward to war on our continent and will vote in their next election.

EPS Response to Traffic Collisions

The increased incidence of car accidents, injuries, and fatalities over the past couple of years is a matter of concern. It coincides with EPS largely abdicating its duty to investigate car crashes and delegating the responsibility to Collision Reporting Centres, wholly funded by the insurance industry. Some motorists may be less concerned about driving recklessly, as the police decided not to enforce the Traffic Safety Act all that much anymore. The potential introduction of auto accident no-fault legislation later in the year by the provincial government could further shield bad drivers and their insurers from accountability, testing the limits of acceptable collateral damage on Alberta roads.

Biden and Trudeau – A Contrast in Crisis Management

The contrast in crisis management between President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau is striking. After his recent debate debacle, President Biden immediately took ownership of the situation, held press conferences, and met with stakeholders to deal with the crisis. In contrast, Prime Minister Trudeau, whose party lost Toronto-St. Paul’s in a byelection, spent 10 days randomly appearing across the country, refusing to answer any questions. He finally held a press conference in Montreal on Wednesday, but he has repeatedly refused calls to hold an in-person national caucus meeting, and does not seem to comprehend that there is a problem, as his party increasingly questions his leadership. In his world, everything will be fine as long as he lies low long enough.

Conclusion

As a healthcare editor with knowledge of healthcare, treatments, research, and alternative medicines, I urge Alberta Health Services to address the issue of increased delays in proper care delivery for cancer patients at CCI promptly. I hope that the authorities address the issue of fraudulent use of Legal Aid services, and that our leaders take proactive measures to ensure Canada’s security. Finally, I hope that EPS and the provincial government take appropriate measures to reduce the increased incidence of car accidents, injuries, and fatalities, and that Prime Minister Trudeau shows leadership and addresses the crisis his party is facing.
