Remembering Raffaella “Lena” Sacco: A Life Well-Lived

Raffaella “Lena” Sacco, born in Naples, Italy on August 15, 1917, was a remarkable woman who embodied the virtues of hard work, perseverance, and faith. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Gurnee, IL on December 11, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will endure for generations.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Driven by a desire to seek a better life for herself, Lena left her mother’s home in Naples and immigrated to the United States in 1950. She settled in Long Island, NY, where she became known for her exceptional skills as a seamstress. Despite not having a higher education herself, Lena recognized the value of hard work and was determined to make a better life for herself and her family. She went to night school to learn English, worked tirelessly to become an American citizen, and even learned to drive and live on her own – something that was virtually unheard of for women at the time.

After several years in the US, Lena returned to Italy in 1955, where she became a cherished aunt to her nieces and nephews. Her spirit and independence captured the hearts of her family, who were amazed by her unyielding determination to succeed.

A Life of Service

Throughout her life, Lena dedicated herself to her family and her community. She was an avid reader and a humble yet powerful force in the lives of the people around her. She inspired bankers, teachers, priests, lawyers, and doctors alike, many of whom became close family friends. Despite her many accomplishments, Lena never lost sight of her greatest ambition – to create a better life for her family.

A True Family Matriarch

Lena’s unwavering love and devotion to her family was a hallmark of her character. She encouraged her daughters, Nancy Anne and Marie, to pursue their dreams and to never give up, no matter how difficult the path may seem. As a doting grandmother, Lena imparted her wisdom and guidance to her five beloved grandchildren, Michael Joseph, Marisa Faith, Matthew Holt, Dominic Eduardo, and Vincent Gabriel.

A Life Well-Lived

Lena’s life was not without challenges. She battled various health issues, including Burkitt’s lymphoma and a stroke, with fierce determination and grace. Her love for her family and her unflinching faith sustained her through even the toughest times.

Lena’s enduring spirit and dedication to her family will be sorely missed, but her legacy will endure forever. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society or The University of Michigan Cancer Center, Hematology/Oncology Dept in memory of Raffaella “Lena” Sacco.

Visitation will be held at the McMurrough Funeral Chapel in Libertyville, IL on December 13 from 4-8 PM. A mass will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Gurnee on December 14 at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville.
